what we do in the classroom

Let’s talk Science!

  • We create flashcards- these are on index cards and we create them in class for students to use as a study tool. Science is filled with A LOT of vocabulary, so these are words the students NEED to KNOW. They keep them in a baggy in their Science folder. We encourage the students to look over them at school and they can take them home as long as they bring them right back the next day so we can continue to add more words.

  • Daily notes- we take notes almost daily that the students glue into their notebooks. This is also something they can use as a study tool to prepare for tests.

  • Weekly Starter Sheet- Students receive this paper on Mondays. They have time in class to work on each day. Then we go over the answers as a class. On FRIDAYS the students will have a Starter Sheet Quiz with 5 questions randomly pulled off that week's sheet. It is important that the students study the sheet prior to the quiz. Students are encouraged to take the sheet home to study overnight and always bring it back with them the next day.

  • Tests- At the end of each unit there will be a test. Be on the lookout for these dates posted in Class Dojo.

All about Math

A glimpse into our math class each day…

  • Complete a math starter sheet with a variety of math topics that students should stay fresh on throughout the year. Right now most of the questions review 4th grade topics. As we complete units, the starter sheet will include 5th grade topics. Each Friday, students will complete a math starter quiz. This will be taken for a minor grade.
  • Vocab Cards: just like science, vocabulary is extremely important, especially when it comes to understanding words within a story problem. Students will complete vocab cards on an almost daily basis and will keep them in a math card bag. They may bring these home to study, but must return to school the next day.
  • Math notebooks are used for daily notes. These are either written in or glued in worksheets that we complete together. These should be used to study for any upcoming tests.
  • IXL.com is an online resource that we will be using heavily this year. It has excellent practice questions for every topic that we will explore this year. Students will complete IXL tasks on a weekly basis to review the previous weeks learning. This is also something that can be done at home, as an option, for studying and extra practice. I will send out login information soon.
  • HOMEWORK: right now, the only math homework that students have is to practice, practice, practice, PRACTICE multiplication facts! At least 5 minutes each day. They can use flash cards, just calling out facts while you’re driving to sports practice, or there are TONS of apps to put on phones/tablets. Multiplication facts need to be FLUENT.

Ready for Reading?

  • Daily notes- we take notes almost everyday in our ELA notebooks. We use the first section of our notebooks for Reading Comprehension topics and the middle section for vocabulary. The third section will be used later on in the year. This notebook is a great study tool for students because we will glue in practice passages and questions in our reading section.

  • Weekly starter sheet- students work on a variety of literacy skills such as comprehension, grammar, and words/vocabulary. This is completed daily and turned in on Fridays. As of right now there is not a quiz that goes along with this.

  • Weekly Station packets- This is the students daily independent work. They have anywhere from 20-30 minutes to work and are only expected to complete one station per day. This is turned in at the end of the week on Fridays for a minor grade. They are graded on accuracy, and effort.

  • Tests- There will be comprehension tests throughout the year as we finish units/topics. Be on the lookout for these dates posted in Class Dojo.

Social Studies time

This year we will use Studies Weekly Newspapers in Social Studies.  Students will read the newspaper articles in class together.  They will then work with their teachers to find the answers to the questions they will be asked.  They will highlight the answers and then use their highlighted Newspaper to answer the questions on the Studies Weekly Quiz.

We will also use Flocabulary to give students another perspective on the time period we are studying.
